PTC Foundation participates in Grand Casino’s Giving Trees program for a chance to win $5,000 for student scholarships

The Pine Technical College Foundation is participating in Grand Casino’s inaugural Giving Trees program, beginning this afternoon. The Foundation will decorate a six-foot-tall holiday tree at the Grand Casino - Hinckley, in hopes of winning First Prize, $5,000. The winnings will be deposited in the PTC Foundation’s Bridging the Dream scholarship reserve, augmenting funds available for scholarship recipients.

“We’re especially excited about this program since it will directly benefit our students. Considering that our full-time scholarships are awarded in amounts of $1250, our Bridging the Dream program will be able to support four additional full-time students if we win the grand prize, and that’s very exciting,” says Nancy Mach, PTC’s Dean of Student Affairs.

Four area organizations are participating in the Giving Trees program, including the PTC Foundation, and the trees will be judged by casino guests, associates, and online visitors – fans of Grand Casino’s Facebook page. The trees will be on display at the Grand Casino’s Events Center, Mon. Nov. 28, and judging will be finalized at 12 p.m. Mon. Dec. 5. The winners of the contest will be based on the number of online “likes” on Facebook combined with the number of votes collected onsite. The program’s prize structure is as follows: First Place, $5,000; Second Place, $2,000; Third Place, $500.

“Our tree will carry a very student-centered theme; it will showcase photos of current students hard at work – studying, in the lab, in class, doing groupwork, and doing what they do best,” says Sandi Carlisle, Executive Assistant to the President and Foundation Manager.

The trees are donated by Mickman Brothers, and once judging is final, all trees will be donated to a family in need of a holiday tree.

“We’re going to want a lot of votes for our tree, so we are encouraging all staff, faculty, and students to ‘like’ our tree online,” Mach says. “We just need to all get online and vote and help our students get those scholarship dollars!”

Empowerment Through Online Education

In a 2007 report published by the Sloan Consortium, most universities stated that the main reasons they continued to expand their online education programs were because such programs improved student access to education. For example, when universities offer courses online, they can work around limited classroom space, instructor shortages, and conflicting course schedules to offer more students more classes.
Similarly, in taking an online course that allows them to complete assignments at their own pace, students can work around their busy course and work schedules, as well as tailor their coursework to their own personal learning styles. Students increasingly enroll in online courses over their summer break while they live with their parents and work summer jobs. Additionally, more and more international students choose to enroll in online courses, forgoing the obstacles associated with arranging visas and international travel.
More importantly, however, online courses allow universities to reach out to students who have been traditionally unable, for a variety of reasons, to enroll in classes on campus.
Online Education’s Historical Counterpart
Online education’s predecessor, distance education, became popular in the nineteenth century precisely because it offered people from rural, working class communities access to higher education.

Admittedly, a college education was historically only available to those who had the financial means to pay annual tuition and incur the cost of relocating to a university. In contrast, distance education made it possible for students to pay by the course, rather than by the year, as well as save on the living and transportation expenses associated with enrolling full-time on a college campus.
Distance students could receive via mail the same kinds of materials their often more privileged peers enrolled in campus-based colleges had access to – without relocating or forgoing their employment – for a fraction of the cost of annual tuition. These distance education programs promised their students a piece of the American dream: everyone, regardless of their personal circumstances, could obtain a higher education.
Similarly, online education programs offer the same opportunities. For those who cannot commit to full-time enrollment on a college campus, the chance to take a course online is certainly appealing. The single or stay-at-home parent can complete online courses in the evenings without arranging for a babysitter. The elderly can continue their education without worrying about the awkwardness of being in a classroom full of teenagers and twenty-somethings. Military personnel can continue their education while being on active duty.
Similarly, students with disabilities can take online courses at their own pace. For those with mental disabilities such as ADD, an online course can offer a self-pacing environment, free from the distractions of the classroom and the anxiety of hard deadlines. For those with physical disabilities, the online classroom can be easier to negotiate. And finally, the full-time employee can take online courses without taking vacation days or compromising a work schedule. In some cases, employees might even be able to convince their employers to pay for part of all of the costs of continuing education, especially if the courses will directly contribute to job improvement or a promotion.
Online Flexibility Empowers Many
As all of these examples demonstrate, online education provides a high level of flexibility. Similarly, online courses offer financial flexibility. For the student who cannot afford an annual tuition, most online programs allow their students to pay by the course.
If you can’t manage the costs of a full twelve or fifteen hour semester, you can get a jump on your college degree by taking one or two courses at a time. This method of enrolling in college can be especially successful when students choose to enroll in core curriculum courses online. Often, students can take online versions of standard courses that are required at almost every university such as English 101, Math 101, and Sociology 101.
Frequently, the credits the student earns in these courses are transferable. Consequently, if the student decides later to enroll full time on campus at a university, these courses will count towards their degree, saving both time and money. At some institutions, students can earn entire degrees online, paying course by course and completing the work at their own pace. This is often far more economical than continuing to eek out annual tuition payments, especially if personal circumstances mean that the student will take more than the expected four years to graduate, or the student only needs a couple of courses or an advanced degree or certificate for a job promotion.
Words of Caution
While universities celebrate online education’s potential to enfranchise previously disenfranchised students, such as nontraditional students, minority students, and students with a limited income, they also bear great responsibility for ensuring that those students are truly empowered by online education programs.
Undercutting academia’s laudable claim that online courses give disenfranchised students a chance to earn a college degree is the fact that increasing university enrollments can increase the university’s profits. This was as true in the nineteenth century distance education programs as it is in the twenty-first century online classroom.
While most have a legitimate interest in educating its students, some distance and online education programs have historically taken advantage of as many students as they have empowered. In the nineteenth century, correspondence courses were offered largely without national oversight. As many online courses do now, these correspondence programs promised their students that after paying for and completing their coursework, students could expect to have more and better job opportunities. Frequently, this wasn’t the case. Employers continued to privilege those job candidates who had degrees from traditional institutions.
Research has shown that this continues to be true in the twenty-first century. While many employers are increasingly willing to consider applicants who have earned their degrees either partially or entirely online, there are those that would rather give jobs to those who have degrees from traditional colleges. However as more and more brand name colleges and universities offer online options to their students, the distinctions between online and traditional programs are beginning to blur.

PTC waives application fees in honor of National College Application Week

In recognition of National College Application Week, PTC will waive the $20 application fee Nov. 14 through Nov. 18. Nearly all Minnesota State Colleges and Universities are participating in the weeklong push to encourage those thinking about starting or going back to college to apply by waiving application fees.

“This is a golden opportunity for those thinking about college who need that final nudge of encouragement to apply and find out that college really is possible," says Nancy Mach, Dean of Student Affairs. "College Application Week also provides an opportunity for our applicants to discover financial aid, grants and scholarships are available to assist with tuition and other costs associated with college,” Mach adds.

National College Application Week is part of a national initiative brought forward by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO). The weeklong event urges high schools and postsecondary institutions to collaborate in a concentrated effort to engage and inform underrepresented (first-generation college students, students of color, and low-income) students about the college application process. The first year for such an event in Minnesota, 17 high schools across the state are serving as pilot sites, including one in PTC’s service area – Rush City High School.

“College Application Week sends the message that college is possible for every student,” says President Robert Musgrove, Ph.D. “It is our hope that high school students in our service area will plan for college because we make it possible, and we’re prepared to fit their needs and goals,” Musgrove explains.

The Benefits of Online Education

Online Education and Distance Learning has evolved over the years. Many universities and colleges around the world have begun offering online education as a part of their off campus courses. This has enabled many people, especially working adults to continue and complete their higher education. In fact it has not only become popular amongst working adults but students too.

New construction accommodates campus growth

PTC's landscape is changing as the college is in the midst of several construction projects necessary to accommodate its growth. Over the past few years, the college has experienced growth in enrollment, an increase of staff and faculty members, and growth in the variety of programs available to students and services available to students and the community.

“We’re seeing the investment in our future take shape, and at the moment, that translates to a handful of structural changes,” says President Robert Musgrove, Ph.D. “Our master plan includes a focus on using the space available to meet the needs of our community and our growing student population,” Musgrove explains.

The college recently acquired a 1,144 square-foot house, built by students in Pine City High School’s building trades class. The house sits at the northwest end of the campus and once ready, will house PTC’s Child Care Resource & Referral department. At the south end of the campus, a 3,500 square-foot storage facility is being built, which will serve as a storage building for the college’s Facilities Department, as well as house college vehicles and other equipment. The house is nearly ready at this time; the storage facility is on schedule for completion by the first week in Dec.

Inside the college’s main building, the ever-growing Nursing Department and an all-new Wellness Room are on track to move into the area vacated by Child Care Resource & Referral. Construction of the Wellness Room is funded through a recent federal health training grant the college was awarded in Oct.

“We’re very excited to bring the Wellness Room to PTC. It will serve as a place of peace for students as they move through the ups and downs of college life,” says Director of Nursing, Krista Hoekstra. “For example, it will be a calm and inviting place where students are able to meditate. Also, it will serve as a more private place for breastfeeding mothers on campus. We want our students to relieve stress and discover a healthier and more balanced way of living while remaining efficient and productive,” Hoekstra explains.

The college also is making progress toward building an Entrepreneurship Center and Technology Business Incubator. PTC's current Continuing Education and Customized Training building will undergo significant construction and remodeling to house the incubator. Ground-breaking for this project is tentatively set for April, 2012, and the incubator’s first tenants may begin operations from the center sometime during the Fall, 2012 term.

The new Entrepreneurship Center and Technology Business Incubator will house light manufacturing and technology-based businesses working toward producing innovative products or services. The facility will be designed to house two to three start-up companies simultaneously, as well as comfortable meeting space. Additionally, the facility will be designed in a resource-efficient manner, using renewable energy.
